Game overview
Jungle and rally-style off-road courses differ from circuits in that the surface is constantly launching you. You spend a meaningful fraction of the lap with reduced tyre contact, and during that time steering and braking do nothing — so the driving is really a sequence of decisions about what attitude to be in when you land. The technique that follows is to make your inputs while you have grip and hold them steady while you do not. Trying to steer mid-air, or braking on the way down, is where control is lost, and the fast drivers look oddly passive over the rough sections.
This title is best suited to players who enjoy rough-terrain driving and the discipline of timing inputs to grip.
How to play Off Track Jungle Race
- Make steering and braking inputs while the tyres are on the ground, not while airborne.
- Hold a steady attitude through bumps rather than correcting mid-air.
- Land with the wheels straight; a turned wheel on touchdown snaps the car sideways.
- Anticipate crests — the input has to come before the launch, not after.
Controls
- Arrow keys or WASD to drive
Objectives and failure conditions
Objectives
- Finish ahead of the field or inside the target time
- Maintain control across broken terrain
The run ends or fails when
- Losing control on landing with the wheels turned
- Rolling on an uneven landing
- Falling outside the event time requirement
Gameplay mechanics
- Frequent loss of tyre contact over uneven ground
- Inputs having no effect while airborne
- Landing attitude determining post-landing control
- Terrain-driven pacing rather than corner geometry
Tips for Off Track Jungle Race
- Steer on the ground, coast in the air. Inputs while airborne achieve nothing and set up a bad landing.
- Straighten the wheels before touchdown. A turned wheel on landing is the most common way to lose it.
- Anticipate crests. Whatever you need to have done, do it before the launch.
What worked well and what did not
Pros
- Airborne-versus-grounded input discipline is a real and distinctive skill
- Terrain gives each course a strong character
Cons
- Landings can be unpredictable enough to feel random
- Recovering from a roll usually costs the event
